Out and Up – 2-4 Claremont Street South Yarra Re-Clad – Mast Climbers
Re-Clad
Alclad Architectural has successfully completed this intricate Re-Clad on this Apartment tower. The original build was littered in combustible ACP and Spotted Gum Lining boards! With Non-Combustible being the #1 priority on this project the team came up with a compliant non-combustible cladding system that exceeds the Reg 126, FP 1.4 and passed every water test.
The original cladding was removed and recycled then new Insulation, permeable sarking, sub-framing and Cassette Fixed Solid Aluminium cladding installed. The Natural Spotted Gum was replaced with a Timber look Non-Combustible system which will look as good as its 1st day in 20 years.
The huge challenge the #ATEAM had on this project was access as this building is fully occupied! The solution…. Mast Climber, Scaffold, Abseiling and Mechanical access at street level.

What the builder had to say…
“In the initial engagement with Alclad, the architect design had a lot of reviews and changes and the advice from Alclad was excellent. Throughout the design development process, we appreciated Alclad’s advice and their willingness to help and co-ordinate multiple changes.
The team throughout the completion of the project were very efficient, knowledgeable and easy to get along with. They had the right attitude, asked questions and offered solutions which we believe is key to a successful finish. The project had a tight programme which required Alclad to project three crews to work across the multiple zones. The zones included difficult access requirements – rope, mast climber, boom and balcony access with Alclad handing over each zone on-time with minimal defects.
The major difficulty of this project was completing works through tenanted apartments and onto balconies during the height of the COVID Pandemic. Together with ALCAD we created a safe working system which worked seamlessly between Alclad workers and the tenants of crica 85 apartment we had to enter through.
Hutchies are actively working on partnering with Alclad on future cladding jobs in 2022.
Thanks again to Daniel and Lloyd for the successful completion of the Claremont St Reclad project.
The finish was exceptional – 10/10 and is why I would use Alclad again. I wanted to build something I was proud of and I am very proud of this project! The windows was the main part and the success of the finish was a result of the hard work in the design development stage.”

Mast Climbers
Q. Why a Mast Climber?
A. Mast climbing platforms are ideal for any project. In other words reaching heights up to 250 metres and 8,000 kilogram capacity. Mast Climbers are reliable, safe and suitable for onsite working conditions.
The benefits:
• Safe and ergonomic performance allow mast climbers to withstand powerful winds.
• Flexibility that allows you to work at whatever height you need.
• Saves time and labour costs.
• Easy transportation and reduced need for onsite storage.
• Elimination of unauthorised access to project sites.
What can be said when you’re looking at using a mast climber for your construction project. You’re not looking for a mast climber, you’re looking for quick and easy access to the external façade of the building you’re working on.
The problem is, not many people are aware of mast climbers, let alone the benefits a mast climber can provide.
A few points below on what exactly a mast climber is and what makes it such a valuable modern method of construction.
Q. What is a Mast Climber?
A. Best described as a vertically travelling motorised platform attached to the outside of a building, a mast climber is used for all areas of building work, from new build construction to repairs, maintenance, facilities management and the ultimate solution for recladding.
Travelling up and down one or more vertical masts, a mast climber carries both materials and personnel to the required working level, helping complete work much faster and on budget.
Mast climbers come in a range of shapes and sizes, offering a variety in height, width, and load capacities, meaning they can be used on all types of multi-storey buildings.

A Mast Climber for your project
One of the most common misconceptions is that a mast climber work platform is a straight-line solution only.
It isn’t.
Designed to work around everything a building can throw in its way, mast climbers can still be used around corners and if buildings have balconies, making them just as flexible as scaffolding.
This means there is an almost bespoke approach to every mast climber, tailored to your building.
Mast climbers can be as small as 2.5m in length or as wide as 37.8m with a twin mast, capable of working as high as 250m and can even be double stacked, so whatever size or scale of your project, there is a mast climber option available to you!
